Post-Doctoral Associates

Rajasekaran, Pradeep Ramiah

Pradeep graduated with a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Chemistry from Madurai Kamaraj University in Madurai, India. He graduated at the top of his class and was awarded the Gold Medal Award for both degrees. After earning his Master's degree he joined the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Southern Illinois University Carbondale for his Ph.D. He worked with Prof. Punit Kohli on Lithography and Device Fabrication. He was awarded Bob G. Gower and Mary Beth Gower Fellowship in 2011. After completing his Ph.D., he joined Prof. Charles R. Martin, the director of the Center for Research at Bio/Nano Interface at the University of Florida. He worked at the interface of materials chemistry, electrochemistry and biology and was involved in the fabrication of electrochemical devices for applications in microfluidics, Biotechnology and Energy. He joined MSAL in the Fall of 2016. He is currently focusing on exploring the underlying mechanism of "The Gut-Microbiome-Brain Axis" through designing and demonstrating a multimodal electrochemical sensor integrated, 3D printed tissue culture discovery platform.


Graduate Students

Banis, George

George Banis received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering with a focus in Electrical Engineering from The College of New Jersey in 2014. His previous research experience was in computational modeling of stochastic physiological systems, specifically cardiorespiratory function, while his senior design project focused on 3D-printing of various biomaterials. He is pursuing a Ph.D. in Bioengineering with current research interests in designing ingestible integrated systems for gastrointestinal sampling and analysis, specifically toward management of pancreatic pathologies. He joined MSAL at the University of Maryland in College Park in March of 2015.

Chapin, Ashley

Ashley Chapin graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Engineering from MIT in February of 2016. Her undergraduate research focused on engineering proteins to act as analyte-dependent fMRI contrast agents, which would allow for visualization of molecular activity in the brain. She is now pursuing a PhD in Bioengineering through the Fischell department. She hopes to extend her expertise in biosensing by developing novel devices to detect and quantify various molecular processes in the body. Her current project focuses on developing on-chip electrochemical neurotransmitter sensors to study an in vitro model of the gut-microbiome-brain-axis. 

Chu, Sang Wook

Sangwook Chu received a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering at Hanyang University, Seoul, South Korea in 2012. His senior research project has developed wirelessly-controlled LED display devices based on after-image effects for promoting public adoption of bicycles as environmentally-friendly transportation. He continued developing his academic career at the University of Maryland since 2012, pursuing his M.S./Ph.D. degrees in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. After joining MSAL in Spring 2013, his research has focused on developing 3D bio-patterning technology allowing controlled functionalization of biomacromolecules onto densely arranged microstructures towards advanced bioelectronics. He is currently investigating potentials of the enabling technology for development of advanced/miniaturized enzyme-based bioelectronics including glucose sensors and enzymatic biofuel-cells.

Huiszoon, Ryan

Ryan Huiszoon received his Bachelor of Science degree from Southwestern University in physics in May 2015. His previous research experience involved electrospinning polymer scaffolds to promote tissue regeneration. He joined the University of Maryland Bioengineering department in Fall 2015 and joined MSAL full-time in Spring 2016. His current research interest is focused on developing sensors for the monitoring and treatment of bacterial biofilm.

Stine, Justin

Justin Stine received a Bachelor of Arts in Physics and Mathematics, with a minor in Musical Performance, from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2014. His senior research thesis encompassed modeling the effects of varying dissipation profiles for accretion discs of X-ray binaries. He was accepted into the University of Maryland in August 2015 to pursue a Master's of Science degree in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, with a concentration in Microelectronics. After joining MSAL in March 2017, Justin's research has focused on the design and integration of wireless communication modules with biomedical devices. He is currently developing a real-time wireless sensing platform for bioprocess monitoring in industrial bioreactors.
